Why your Wi-Fi is slow in a log or timber home — and how to fix it
If you own a log, timber, or heavy-construction home in North Idaho, you already know the feeling: full bars in the living room, nothing in the back bedroom, and a total dead zone out in the shop. It isn't your internet plan — it's your house.
Why log and timber homes are so hard on Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is just radio, and radio doesn't like dense material. The very things that make a North Idaho home beautiful and warm are the things that stop a signal cold:
- Log and timber walls. Solid wood — especially thick, dense logs — absorbs Wi-Fi far more than the drywall a normal router is designed for.
- Metal roofs. Common up here, and effectively a mirror for wireless signal.
- In-floor radiant heat. The metal and concrete in the floor block signal from traveling between levels.
- Stone fireplaces and tile. Big masses of masonry create shadows a router can't reach around.
- Size and outbuildings. A router that covers a 1,500 sq ft condo has no chance across a 4,000 sq ft home plus a detached shop or dock.
Why the free router never works
The router your internet company or a big-box store hands you is one radio in one spot, usually near where the cable enters the house — often a corner or a utility room, the worst possible place. It's trying to blanket the whole home from there, through all of that wood and metal. No setting or "Wi-Fi booster" changes the physics.
What actually fixes it
The professional answer is simple in concept: instead of one router shouting through the walls, you place several access points around the home, each connected back to the network by wire. Each access point puts out a strong, fresh signal in its area, so every room — and the shop and the dock — gets full speed.
Measured placement, not guessing
The difference between a good install and a frustrating one is measurement. We walk your actual home, test where the signal dies, and place access points based on your construction and layout — not a generic diagram. Then we speed-test every room and prove the coverage before we leave.
Wired beats "extenders"
Plug-in Wi-Fi extenders and daisy-chained mesh nodes relay a signal that's already weak, so they tend to disappoint in exactly the homes that need help most. Running Ethernet to each access point — through the attic, crawlspace, or existing conduit — is what makes it reliable.

Will a mesh Wi-Fi system fix a log home?
Sometimes, but often not well. Mesh nodes talk to each other over the same Wi-Fi that the walls are blocking, so signal degrades node to node. In a log or timber home the reliable fix is access points connected by wire (Ethernet) back to the router — each one puts out a strong, fresh signal instead of relaying a weak one.
How many access points does a log home need?
It depends on the square footage, the wall construction, and the outbuildings — but most log homes need two to four well-placed access points, not one router. We measure the actual home and place them where the coverage gaps are, then speed-test each room to prove it.
Can you improve Wi-Fi without running wires everywhere?
Usually yes. We look for existing coax or Ethernet, use the attic or crawlspace for clean runs, and only fall back to wireless links where wiring truly isn't practical. The goal is strong wired-back access points with the least disruption to the home.
